Donate by Dec 31 in Alaska and deduct your car’s sale price

Donate your car in Alaska by December 31 and lock in a 2024 tax deduction based on the car’s sale price. Alaska Wheels Forward gives you free pickup, no-hassle paperwork, and an IRS-ready receipt.

Donate your car in Alaska to Alaska Wheels Forward on or before December 31, and you may claim a 2024 charitable tax deduction if you itemize. For vehicles that sell for more than $500, your deduction is based on the actual gross sale price, not Kelley Blue Book. After your vehicle sells, Heritage for the Blind (our 501(c)(3) partner, EIN 58-2164446) mails you IRS Form 1098-C within 30 days of the sale. For vehicles that sell for $500 or less, you’ll receive a written acknowledgment, and you may generally deduct up to $500 or the vehicle’s fair market value, whichever is lower. Keep your pickup confirmation as proof of your donation date, and always consult a tax professional about your specific situation.

Alaska Wheels Forward makes it easy to help people who are blind or visually impaired while clearing your driveway before breakup or deep winter snow. We offer free towing across Alaska—from Anchorage, Eagle River, and the Mat-Su Valley to Fairbanks, North Pole, the Kenai Peninsula (Kenai, Soldotna, Homer), Juneau and the Southeast communities we can reach by road or ferry. Non-running cars, trucks, SUVs, and many other vehicles are welcome. The online form takes about two minutes, our dispatch runs Monday through Saturday in most areas, and you get the tax paperwork you need without a trip to the DMV.

Your year-end donation timeline

1

Lock in your deduction date

2 minutes

Submit our quick online form or call us before midnight on December 31 from anywhere in Alaska. Your donation date is the day you legally transfer the vehicle, so keep your confirmation email or pickup slip with your tax records.

2

Schedule free Alaska pickup

5 minutes

Our towing partner contacts you to set a convenient time, Monday–Saturday, in most areas of Anchorage, Fairbanks, Kenai Peninsula, Mat-Su, Juneau, and more. No inspection or repairs needed—non-running vehicles are fine.

3

Sign over the title at pickup

10 minutes

When the tow truck arrives, you hand over the keys and title and sign the necessary transfer paperwork. This completes your donation. The driver leaves you a pickup confirmation—save it as proof of your donation date for your records.

4

We sell your vehicle and document the price

Varies by sale

Alaska Wheels Forward arranges the sale of your vehicle. The gross sale price is what matters for your tax deduction if it’s over $500. We handle all sale logistics; you don’t negotiate or advertise anything yourself.

5

Receive your IRS-ready paperwork

Within 30 days of sale

If your vehicle sells for more than $500, Heritage for the Blind mails you IRS Form 1098-C within 30 days of the sale. If it’s $500 or less, you receive a written acknowledgment. Use this, plus Schedule A, when you file your return.

Year-end tax deduction facts

Deduction equals sale price over $500

For vehicles that sell for more than $500, the IRS generally limits your deduction to the actual gross sale price, not Kelley Blue Book or a private estimate. Your Form 1098-C will show this sale amount.

Vehicles at $500 or less

If your donated vehicle sells for $500 or less, you typically may deduct up to $500 or its fair market value, whichever is lower. You’ll receive a written acknowledgment to support your deduction.

IRS Form 1098-C

For vehicles sold for more than $500, Heritage for the Blind sends you IRS Form 1098-C within 30 days after the sale. This official form documents the sale price and donation details the IRS expects with your return.

You must itemize on Schedule A

To claim any car donation deduction, you must file Form 1040 with Schedule A (Itemized Deductions). If you take the standard deduction, you generally can’t also claim a separate deduction for your donated vehicle.

December 31 donation cutoff

Donate on or before December 31 to generally count the deduction for that tax year, even if your car sells and you receive Form 1098-C in the following year. Keep your pickup confirmation as proof of the donation date.

FAQ

If I donate my car in Alaska on December 31, can I still deduct it for this tax year?
Yes, in most cases. The IRS bases the deduction year on the date you make the charitable donation, not when the car sells. As long as you complete the donation on or before December 31, you generally can claim it for that tax year. Keep your pickup confirmation and title-transfer records as proof, and consult your tax professional.
How much can I deduct for my donated car with Alaska Wheels Forward?
If your vehicle sells for more than $500, your deduction is generally limited to the gross sale price shown on Form 1098-C. If it sells for $500 or less, you may usually deduct up to $500 or its fair market value, whichever is lower. Remember, you must itemize on Schedule A to claim any deduction. Talk to a tax advisor about your situation.
When will I get IRS Form 1098-C for my Alaska car donation?
After your car sells, Heritage for the Blind will mail you IRS Form 1098-C within 30 days of the sale if the gross sale price is over $500. If the sale price is $500 or less, you’ll receive a written acknowledgment instead. You can still claim the deduction for the year you donated, even if the form arrives in the following calendar year.
Do I need to know my car’s Kelley Blue Book value before donating?
You don’t need an exact Kelley Blue Book value to donate. For vehicles that sell for over $500, your deduction is based on the actual sale price, not a price guide. For vehicles at $500 or less, fair market value matters, but your deduction is capped at $500 or FMV, whichever is lower. A tax professional can help if you’re unsure about value.
Can I claim a deduction if I take the standard deduction on my taxes?
No. To benefit from a car donation deduction, you generally must itemize deductions on Schedule A of your federal return. If you use the standard deduction, you typically can’t claim an additional charitable deduction for your vehicle. It may still be worthwhile to donate for the convenience and charitable impact, even without a tax benefit.
What paperwork do I need to keep for my Alaska car donation?
Keep your pickup confirmation, any towing receipts, a copy of the signed title transfer, and the written acknowledgment or Form 1098-C you receive from Heritage for the Blind. These documents support your deduction and show the donation date, sale price (if applicable), and that the charity is a qualified 501(c)(3). Store them with your tax records for at least as long as the IRS recommends.
Does my car have to run or pass an inspection to qualify?
No. We accept many non-running vehicles in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Kenai, Mat-Su, Juneau and other reachable Alaska communities. There’s no inspection or repair required. We arrange free pickup where service is available, handle the sale as-is, and provide the appropriate tax acknowledgment based on the vehicle’s eventual sale price. Always verify deductible treatment with your tax preparer.
