Receive your tax receipt and lock in deduction

Within weeks after sale

After your vehicle is sold, Heritage for the Blind mails you a written tax receipt, generally within 30 days of the sale. For eligible donations, you’ll use this receipt and IRS Form 1098-C with your return to claim your deduction for this tax year, as long as pickup was by December 31.

Year-end tax deduction facts

December 31 = this year’s deduction

For IRS purposes, your car donation counts in the year the charity takes possession. That means your vehicle must be picked up and signed over to Heritage for the Blind by December 31 to qualify for this tax year’s deduction.

Form 1098-C for larger donations

When your donated vehicle is sold, Heritage for the Blind issues a written acknowledgment. For qualifying donations, this includes the details needed for IRS Form 1098-C, which you attach to your tax return to substantiate the value of your vehicle deduction.

Deduction is based on sale price

In most cases, the IRS lets you deduct the actual gross sale price of your donated vehicle, not a guess at its market value. Once your car sells, your receipt will show the sale amount you may use when you itemize deductions on Schedule A.

30-day acknowledgment after sale

After the vehicle is sold, Heritage for the Blind generally sends your written acknowledgment within about 30 days of the sale. Keep this with your tax records. It documents the donation date, sale price, and the charity’s 501(c)(3) status for the IRS.

Itemizing on Schedule A

To benefit from a vehicle donation, you usually must itemize deductions using Schedule A instead of taking the standard deduction. Consult your tax adviser to see whether itemizing with your car donation and other deductions is advantageous for your situation.

FAQ

What is the absolute last day to donate my car in Alaska for this tax year?
For the IRS, the key date is when Heritage for the Blind actually receives your vehicle, not when you call. Your car must be picked up and signed over by December 31 for it to count for this tax year. To safely secure a December 31 pickup slot in Alaska, contact Alaska Wheels Forward by December 27–28.
Can you really pick up my car during Christmas week in Alaska?
Yes. Alaska Wheels Forward runs pickups for Heritage for the Blind Monday through Saturday all year, including Christmas week and right up to December 31, subject to weather and local towing availability. Holiday slots fill quickly in Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Juneau, so the sooner you schedule, the more options we can offer.
Does the pickup have to be completed by December 31, or just scheduled?
The pickup must be completed. The IRS treats the donation as made when the charity takes possession of the vehicle, which happens at pickup and title transfer—not when you call or submit the form. That’s why we urge Alaska donors to start by December 27 so we can complete your tow by December 31.
My car doesn’t run in the cold. Can I still donate it for a tax deduction?
Yes. Running or not, wrecked, or sitting under snow, your vehicle is usually eligible as long as you have a valid, signed Alaska title. We’ll arrange a free tow from your driveway, street, or storage lot anywhere we operate in Alaska, and you can still receive a tax receipt once the vehicle is sold.
What tax paperwork will I receive for my Alaska car donation?
At pickup, the driver can provide a basic receipt confirming we took possession. After your vehicle sells, Heritage for the Blind mails a more detailed acknowledgment, typically within about 30 days of the sale. For qualifying donations, it includes the information you need for IRS Form 1098-C and your records.
How fast can you pick up my vehicle in Alaska near year-end?
In many Alaska metro areas—Anchorage, Eagle River, Wasilla, Fairbanks, Juneau—we can often arrange same-day or next-business-day towing when you contact us before early afternoon on weekdays. As December 31 approaches, slots fill quickly. Calling by December 27 greatly improves the chance of a pickup in time for this tax year.
Do I need an emissions test, repairs, or a clean car before donating?
No. There’s no need to spend time or money on inspections or repairs. We accept most vehicles as-is, even if they’re damaged, older, or can’t pass emissions. Just remove personal belongings, have your Alaska title signed, and we’ll handle the tow and paperwork for your donation to Heritage for the Blind.
